A semantic-affective compositional approach for the affective labelling of adjective-noun and noun-noun pairs

چکیده
Motivated by recent advances in the area of Compositional Distributional Semantic Models (CDSMs), we propose a compositional approach for estimating continuous affective ratings for adjective-noun (AN) and noun-noun (NN) pairs. The ratings are computed for the three basic dimensions of continuous affective spaces, namely, valence, arousal and dominance. We propose that similarly to the semantic modification that underlies CDSMs, affective modification may occur within the framework of affective spaces, especially when the constituent words of the linguistic structures under investigation form modifier-head pairs (e.g., AN and NN). The affective content of the entire structure is determined from the interaction between the respective constituents, i.e., the affect conveyed by the head is altered by the modifier. In addition, we investigate the fusion of the proposed model with the semantic-affective model proposed in (Malandrakis et al., 2013) applied both at wordand phrase-level. The automatically computed affective ratings were evaluated against human ratings in terms of correlation. The most accurate estimates are achieved via fusion and absolute performance improvement up to 5% and 4% is reported for NN and AN, respectively.

A Structured Vector Space Model for Hidden Attribute Meaning in Adjective-Noun Phrases
We present an approach to model hidden attributes in the compositional semantics of adjective-noun phrases in a distributional model. For the representation of adjective meanings, we reformulate the pattern-based approach for attribute learning of Almuhareb (2006) in a structured vector space model (VSM). This model is complemented by a structured vector space representing attribute dimensions ...
متن کاملLearning Adjective Meanings with a Tensor-Based Skip-Gram Model
We present a compositional distributional semantic model which is an implementation of the tensor-based framework of Coecke et al. (2011). It is an extended skipgram model (Mikolov et al., 2013) which we apply to adjective-noun combinations, learning nouns as vectors and adjectives as matrices. We also propose a novel measure of adjective similarity, and show that adjective matrix representatio...
متن کاملRethinking the Semantics of Complex Nominals
Complex Nominals (CNs) have simple syntactic structure that conceals non-trivial semantic characteristics. While speakers of natural languages combine noun(s)/adjective(s) with a head noun to indicate existing or novel concepts with ease, formalizing such a semantic process, however, has proven to be a daunting task. In this paper, we present a unified semantic approach for constructions involv...
متن کاملDistributional semantic phrases vs. semantic distributional nonsense: Adjective modification in compositional distributional semantics
In this talk, I discuss the ability of compositional distributional semantics to model adjective modification. I present three studies that explore the degree to which semantic intuitions are grounded in the distributional representations of adjective-noun phrases, as well as provide insight into various linguistic phenomena by extracting unsupervised cues from these distributional representati...
متن کاملPre-Noun Modifiers as a Means to Describe Product Characteristics
The article deals with the characteristics of noun phrases functioning in pre-position. Pre-noun modifiers, or attributive modifiers, are among the high-capacity structures in the contemporary English language, as they enable to devoid of prepositions and to describe objects in a laconic way. The goal of this research was to analyze the way scholars interpret this linguistic structure today, as...
